Magnus Manson - The history behind the name
Written by Ruaraidh
Friday, 20 May 2005
Gunn Clan CrestThe name Magnus originated from the Latin "magnus" meaning "great" (from which a number of words in English have derived, such as magnificent and magnify etc). Emperor Charlemagne was known as "Carolus Magnus" (King of the Franks, King of the Lombards, and generally considered the first Holy Roman Emperor) and this prompted admirers to use Magnus as a personal name. St Olaf of Norway (born in 995) who seized the throne of Norway, enlarged it and introduced Christianity to the country, named his son Magnus. As a result, the name spread to places such as Iceland, Orkney, Shetland and Ireland. The addition of "Mc" meaning "son of" gave rise to the surname McManus. The first name Magnus rose in popularity in Scotland in recent years as a result of Magnus Magnusson, the author and TV personality, who was born in Iceland but educated in Edinburgh.

baby MagnusHere's the first pictures of my new wee brother - click Read More to see one of me as well - can't have him stealing all the limelight. In case you hadn't already figured it out I'm not at all chuffed that some young upstart has suddenly muscled in on my territory - just wait till he gets home and realises there's a pecking order in this house - first there's me, then there's mummy, then Rebekah, Cameron and Connor ... then it's Magnus. And Daddy's at the bottom!

A quick note from Dad to let you all know that Melissa gave birth to a wee boy last night (19th May 2005) at 17:15. It was a long labour and an emergency caesarean at the end as the wee one got stuck. (OUCH!) Magnus Alexander Manson weighed in at 8lbs and both mother and baby are doing well. I'll post some photos once I've been up there today. Special thanks goes to the staff at the RAH Maternity Hospital in Paisley who did a marvellous job of looking after Melissa and getting the baby delivered safely.

In case you didn't know - Dad's now officially past it - he turned 38 on Monday (7th March).
Furthermore - you may not be aware that Mum's getting me a baby broster (brother or sister) on May 9th. Hmmmm - she says it'll be really cool but I remain to be convinced.

Roma Roma Yay

Dad managed to get some time off from work so we escaped to Rome in November which was well cool. I got to see all the sights - the Vatican, the Colisseum, the Forum, the Spanish Steps and umpteen Piazzas (and Pizzas). You can see some of our travels in the Rome gallery. We went for 5 nights and Dad carried me around on his back the whole time which made his legs very sore - at least the exercise did him good and he lost some weight as he was getting a bit chubby!!

Happy Birthday to MEEEEEE

August the 18th saw a momentous occasion in the Manson household. It was my FIRST birthday - I'm not wee anymore. Yay!!
Loads and loads of people came to see me and I got lots of lovely presents so I really must say a big thankyou to everyone who made it such a special day. We had a bouncy castle and everything - it was brilliant!!!
Special thanks has to go to my Uncle Mucker Stewart for helping out by cooking up a storm in the kitchen and running the bar - "Thanks a lot, thanks very much!"
As always there are hunners of pictures of the event in the gallery.
Also - I must just let you all know - not that I'm bragging or anything but ....
I TOOK MY FIRST STEPS. It was exactly a week before my birthday and I took two steps to Mummy, then three to Daddy then three back to Mummy without holding on to anything. How cool am I? There's no stopping me now :)

Pooh-Pants Monkeyboy goes to Greece

I went on my first holiday abroad ever - Mummy and Daddy booked a last minute flight to Rhodes and we went to stay in the Esmeralda apartments in a nice wee village called Kremasti. I met lots of new friends like Dimitri, Paul and Nicky and I got to swim in the Mediterranean Sea. I even got a sun-tan on the end of my fingers (which were always dangling outside the shade of the parasol on my pram).
I also sampled many Greek dishes and even got to go to Turkey one day and have a look round the bazaar in Marmaris which was a bit scary 'cos everyone wanted to pick me up. The Turks are a funny lot!!
I'm now speaking a lot although my Mummy and Daddy don't understand me. "Dukken dukken dukken dukken" and "schah" are my favourite phrases but I occasionally slip in the odd words like "lebostromous", "antiphonical" or "probostatically" just to see if they're listening.

I also read a very good book called "Join Me" by Danny Wallace which I think everyone should read.

You can see some of my pictures in the Rhodes gallery if you click on my cheesey grin on the right.

21st May and not a dish washed

Sorry to harp on about this but it constantly amazes me how time just flies by. It seems like nearly 2 months ago Dad was last updating this site ... wait a minute .... ermm!
OK, so he's been working in the Big Smoke for 6 or 7 weeks and there's a high likelihood he's going back soon for another stint. I really miss him while he's away and I go absolutely MENTAL when he comes home - he seems very pleased to see me too - which is nice :)
I've got some more pictures to show you in my gallery here...
I'm now winding my Mummy up with climbing up on my knees to see what the coffee table offers in terms of entertainment - and let me tell you it's not much - my parents are a boring bunch! Still, you have to pity them so I try to keep them amused by scooting about like greased lightning - they can't leave me alone for a minute.
I'm also getting very good at growing teeth - I've got 8 now and a whole load more just waiting to burst through any day now. Next you know I'll be needing my hair cut .....

Well sorry folks for not keeping you updated - Dad's been working in London and will be until 7th May so he's not getting time to keep things up to date. However, I'm getting bigger and cuter by the day so I've put some pictures up in the album so you can see what a bonny boy I am (even if I do say so myself).
Mummy got me a pair of Baby-Banz sunglasses (left)- I think it's hilarious - cracks me up every time she puts them on me.

Our wee valentine

Here I am dressed up as a Valentine's Card. Awwwwwwwwww.
A quick news update - Mum and Dad took me to Inverness where I stayed in a big posh hotel and went swimming for the first time ever which I enjoyed very much - there's some video footage of my aquatic exploits on the way.
Also, I'm now almost 6 months old and I'm allowed to eat chicken and cheese which is well cool as all those veggies were making me trump a lot.

A lot has been happening

So - Happy New Year to everyone. Lots and lots of exciting stuff has been happening over the last month. I got my first tooth through on January 2nd (Ouch!) and ANOTHER came through last week and I've got ANOTHER coming through right now - not happy about this!

Also - my nursery furniture has arrived so I've moved out of Mum & Dad's room into my very own bachelor pad - check it out in the gallery.

I've also been practising standing up a lot. I especially like standing in the tub - aren't I clever.
